You know renovating was the right move when someone asks you about your old family kitchen and you say, “I would have to tell people to get out. There wasn’t enough room for more than one person at a time!”
When we met our clients’ their first-floor layout was only partially working for them. The space was broken up into a large office, a seldom-used dining room, and a kitchen with enough space for one person at a time. Their goal was to expand their kitchen, creating enough space for their family while updating the overall look.
The first step we took was to open things up. We combined the kitchen, dining room, and portion of the office, to create a single spacious eat-in kitchen. With the remaining portion of the office, we created a simple, yet functional, mudroom. Finally, we updated the flooring in the first-floor powder room.
Aside from opening up the kitchen, our design goal was to build a warm and welcoming space, with a timeless look, that provided elevated functionality. We utilized transitional elements that would age well with the rest of the home. We also incorporated our clients’ style into space by including their personal ideas.
The transitional overall look of the kitchen starts with key elements, like the Caesarstone Quartz countertops, Snowcap finished frameless cabinetry (from Glenbrook Cabinetry), and the Hampton Carrara polished marble backsplash. One of the more modern features are the Feiss matte black Brienne pedants. To create even more work and seating space, our clients wanted to include a kitchen island. The new centerpiece also houses the microwave and provides additional storage.
In order to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere, we started from the ground up! The original dining room used Oak hardwood flooring, which we continued into the kitchen. We used Glenbrook Cabinetry’s expertise when it came to designing a custom wood wrapped hood and barn wood open shelves, bringing the warmth and farmhouse vibe eye level.
One thing that we wanted to spotlight is the GE matte white refrigerator. Most clients choose integrated appliances, and forget that there are other options! This refrigerator offers the clean cohesive look of an integrated appliance, with the purchasing ease of your average refrigerator! They also have numerous hardware options, which made it the perfect choice for this project! We chose to utilize the same brass toned hardware on the refrigerator that was used on the cabinetry.
In the new mudroom, guests are welcomed by a clean, organized space, with custom cabinetry and cement hexagon tile.
