Pennsylvania Hospital, located on the western edge of Society Hill Philadelphia, is the oldest hospital in the country. It was founded by Benjamin Franklin anad Dr. Thomas Bond in 1751. The hospital facility includes several buildings constructed since the original structure on Pine Street.
One of the most recent major hospital improvement projects has been the gut renovation of the entire fourth floor of the Preston Building. As with most Gardner/Fox projects, the primary challenge has been phasing the work within an occupied facility. In the realm of occupied facility renovation projects, however, hospital projects are by far the most difficult and exacting. For this project, the floor was divided into quadrants, one of which is a fully contained construction zone.
Each quadrant has been completed on a 14-week schedule from demolition to delivery of the maternity department (no pun intended). The final quadrant was completed in the fall of 2010.
